In terms of the municipal bylaws - Southbroom is a fireworks-free zone ...NO FIREWORKS ARE PERMITTED !! We have ensured that visible signs are up all around town to remind all residents and visitors that we have a ZERO TOLERANCE policy for any fireworks used within our special village. A fine will be issued to anyone who defies this and breaks this bylaw. If you see or hear anyone using fireworks in our village please report it to our Southbroom sector policing immediately on 076 152 4930 OR Ray Nkonyeni Municipality protection services 039 682 5555.

The AGM of Southbroom Conservancy will be held at Southbroom Golf Club at 10 am on 30 December 2024. If a quorum is not present, the alternate date is 6 January 2025 at 10am.

At least 120 people (10% of the Conservancy’s estimated membership) need to be present to form a quorum at the AGM, according to the Conservancy Constitution. Failing this, the meeting has to be deferred for 7 days, to Monday 6 January 2025, at which those present will constitute a quorum. Members are urged to attend.

Given the Conservancy’s now greatly expanded membership, the requirement for such a large number of members to constitute a quorum will be addressed at the AGM. It is proposed that the quorum clause be changed from 10% of members to a minimum of 25 members.

Whip scorpion spiders are not true spiders although they share some similarities with spiders, such as having eight legs and a segmented body, but they have unique features, like their long sensory legs and lack of venom glands
They have very poor eyesight and rely heavily on their sensory legs to navigate and hunt and are fascinating examples of adaptation, showcasing unique sensory adaptations for life in low-light environments.

The recent emotional rants regarding the rock hyraxes, or dassies, in Southbroom contained a number of opinions and comments that require some fact checking.

Dassies are vermin
The term can be so easily applied to almost every terrestrial organism, from elephants to ants, including humans could incorporate many animals and birds in Southbroom. Yet it is being applied only to animals that seem to frustrate us.

Rock dassies displacing tree dassies
The African Wildlife Foundation reports that tree dassies are solitary or live in pairs and do not form larger groups. They are nocturnal. Rock dassies are diurnal, so their activities are unlikely to cause one to displace the other.

Sex ratios of 1:1 changing to 8:1
Perrin and Fourie (1987) observed that dassie colonies usually consist of one dominant male with between 3 and 17 subadult and adult females.

Dassies and rabies
Dassies are considered low risk rabies carriers.

Dassies are overbreeding, population explosions etc
These claims are not backed up by any scientific data whatsoever. The apparent high number seen at this time of the year could be due to:
• End of winter and low food availability in their usual ranges, pushing them to seek food where they are more visible;
• Young being born; or
• Houses being built, forcing them to leave their precious habitats.

Does anyone have any records of regular counts showing an increase in numbers in their area, or for the whole of Southbroom, or are we just seeing more in places that are more visible?

The terms vermin and overpopulation, usually used in the same context, are eagerly adopted by people to justify the killing of animals. These terms very quickly become part of our language and are picked up and repeated by even sensible members of the community. This sort of practice is a major contributor to the 73% decline in wildlife worldwide in the past 50 years.

Seen around Southbroom this morning, the black-bellied starling (Lamprotornis corruscus), is known for its striking appearance and social behavior. These birds, characterized by their glossy black feathers with iridescent hues and their distinctive black bellies, often form large, noisy flocks which can be seen sitting in the canopy of the tree. They are very vocal which gives away their presence.

Some info for Southbroom homeowners, gardeners and garden staff.
Do you know if any of the trees/shrubs in your garden have protected status?
If they do, do you know what you can or cannot do to them?
Protection under the Forestry Act requires a permit to prune or fell. This is only granted with a valid reason. A sea view is not considered a valid reason.
Plants in the Admiralty Zone are protected under the Integrated Coastal Management Act.
The Natal Ordinance covers all indigenous trees, most of the bulbous plants and orchids.

Here are some tips
All cycads and stangerias require a permit through Ezemvelo to possess and another to transport them.
Is it a cycad or a cycas? Look at the leaflets. If the leaflet has a midvein it’s a Cycas and does not require permitting.

Of the 52 species specially protected under the Forestry act, these are found in our local area.
🌳Milkwoods, both red Mimusops caffra and white, Sideroxylon inerme
🌳Yellowwoods, Afrocarpus falcatus, Podocarpus henkelii, Podocarpus latifolius
🌳Cheesewood, Pittosporum viridiflorum
🌳Powderpuff tree, Barringtonia racemosa
🌳Pondo Bushman’s tea, Lydenburgia abbottii
🌳Marula, Sclerocarya birrea

These introductions are also protected
🌳Baobab, Adansonia digitata
🌳Pod mahogany, Afzelia quanensis
🌳Stinkwood, Ocotea bullata
🌳Swamp fig, Ficus trichopoda
🌳Pepperbark tree, Warburghia salustris

The Southbroom Conservancy, with the help of community members, is committed to protecting the last vestiges of wildlife in Southbroom. This entails, amongst other projects, acting against predatory dogs, poachers and habitat destruction.

We understand that dogs occasionally, due to unforeseen circumstances, escape from their homes. Fortunately most are rescued by kind Southbroom souls on the various chat groups. Also some dogs are too small, old and slow to pose any threat to our wildlife. However, over the past few months dogs running wild have been reported by residents and recorded by security cameras, some in the hours around midnight. Some are repeat offenders that have been seen, clearly in pursuit of wildlife, in our protected areas including the Bushbuck Trail, Frederika Preserve and Admiralty coastal zone. One resident has reported regularly seeing three dogs in the Admiralty, on one occasion with fresh blood on their muzzles.

This is an appeal to residents who have dogs that are inclined to escape to take extra precautions to prevent this from happening. Please ensure that gates are closed and that fences allow no escape.
Failure to do so will in future result in the SPCA, the anti-poaching units of the security companies and protection services removing the dogs. If they are able to capture the dogs, they will be taken to the SPCA.

While this message might cause some residents to get upset, please be assured that these actions will not be taken without due cause There is surely agreement among residents that action must be taken to prevent dogs being left to maraud through our protected areas

Please be aware that that All our trails and the Admiralty reserve are protected areas in law!

Join South Conservancy for a fun filled evening of laughter, dancing.,good food and awesome music of all genres with MUSIC BINGO 🕺💃🎶🍷🥗🎵 on Thursday 27th June at the Southbroom Golf Club. Our annual Golf day was a huge success with thanks to everyone's support. This event is the biggest fund raiser for our conservancy as the income enables our conservancy to work at keeping Southbroom the gem of the South Coast.

This excellent footage of two Varanus niloticus (Nile monitor, leguaan, water monitor), who were seen cuddling up and getting fresh with each other in the warm sun this morning was captured by a Southbroom resident in her garden. The Nile monitor is one of Africa's largest lizards who can live up to 20 years in captivity.

The Nile monitor is also listed under the Endangered Species Decree of 1985, which means that international trade of the species in prohibited.

The barn swallows have stuck around a little longer this year and are still at Umkobi lagoon so probably try and catch a peek at them as soon they will be heading North ..

Dragonflies .. We see them everyday...

Dragonflies have existed for hundreds of millions of years and date back to a time even before dinosaurs roamed Earth. Scientists believe dragonflies were some of the earliest winged insects to evolve and have existed for about 300 million years.

Dragonflies are important to the ecosystem because they help control insect populations. Since they rely on clean water, they are considered an indicator of a healthy ecosystem.
